OVERVIEW

Mosaic Lagoon Lodge is a little slice of heaven set on the floodplain of the Klein River near Stanford in the Western Cape. The picturesque lodge faces north with magnificent views over the water to the sinuous Kleinrivier Mountains, and is an ideal escape from the city’s bustle.

Just over two hours’ drive from Cape Town and set in a 376-hectare nature reserve, Mosaic Lagoon Lodge lies in an ancient milkwood forest. Located near the water’s edge when the river is full, this luxury hideaway offers dreamy suites linked by wooden walkways to the main lodge and swimming pool.

Mosaic Lagoon Lodge looks and feels like a Lowveld or Okavango safari establishment. With its thatched buildings, wooden decks and views of the floodplain, you half expect elephants and giraffes to come ambling past. The rhythms of the day are also reminiscent of safari, with morning and evening activities, mostly involving nature and wildlife, and the heat of the day spent relaxing beside the pool or birdwatching from your deck.

This intimate lodge has five luxury, safari-style suites and one family cottage, so there are never more than twelve adults and two children in the lodge when fully booked. The delightful limestone-and-thatch suites are nested among mature milkwood trees and the décor is tastefully done in muted colours with an African theme. Each has an extra-length king-size bed, fireplace, complimentary minibar, coffee/tea facilities, inside and outside shower and a private deck with gorgeous views.

A stay at Mosaic Lagoon Lodge is all about embracing the outdoors in this place of sublime beauty. As with most safari experiences, there are morning and afternoon activities on offer, such as nature drives, beach outings or boating trips.

A morning nature walk reveals the wonders of the endemic ‘fynbos’ vegetation. Head out with Vitalis Chingo, a master-guide from Zimbabwe, who’ll lay bare the riches of the veld, tell the stories of medicinal plants and strange pollinators as well as those of migrant leopards, antelope and caracal. Learn about the Cape Floral Kingdom, which boasts the greatest diversity of plant life for its size on earth (almost 9,000 species), 17% of which is critically rare or endangered.

If you’re keen on water activities, there’s kayaking on the Hermanus Lagoon – a leisurely paddle at your own pace across this glassy expanse. Or take a pontoon-boat cruise from Stanford downriver towards the Hermanus Estuary. Enjoy a picnic or sundowner drinks as you glide along this exquisite stretch of the Klein River. The birdlife is astounding and you’re sure to spot any number of waterfowl, from fish eagles and flamingos to herons and kingfishers.

Sundowners are served each evening as golden light paints the mountains and river. Sip a handcrafted cocktail or glass of bubbly while the sky dials through the colour spectrum.

Dinners are three-course feasts – usually with a South African flavour – prepared by Mosaic’s chefs using local, organic ingredients and complemented by fine regional wines. It’s intimate, unhurried and always delicious.
